The Ultimate Diamond Purchasing Guide: Beyond the 4Cs
Published by SKSS Editorial
When purchasing fine diamonds, the global standard is defined by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) 4Cs: Carat, Cut, Clarity, and Color. However, two diamonds with identical GIA certificates can look radically different in real-world lighting.
First, understand Cut proportions. A diamonds ability to bend and reflect light depends on its table percentage (the flat top facet) and depth percentage. Fine jewellers typically favor cuts with a table percentage between 54% and 58% to maximize fire -- the dispersion of light into rainbow flashes.
Second, consider Clarity characteristics. Many clarity grades such as VS2 contain inclusions that, while technically eye-clean, are strategically placed near the center table where they block internal light rays. Look for perimeter inclusions that do not interfere with the diamonds central prism.
Third, beware of high Fluorescence. Strong fluorescence can make a colorless (D-F) diamond look hazy or milky in sunlight. Look for diamonds with None or Faint fluorescence to preserve crisp crystalline clarity.
