Deciphering the Gold Hallmark: A Guide to BIS & Legal Standards
Published by SKSS Editorial
In India, buying gold is not just a fashion statement; it is a vital ancestral investment. Checking the BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards) Hallmark is legally and financially critical. Since 2021, the government has mandated a six-digit alphanumeric HUID (Hallmark Unique Identification) code to make every piece traceable.
When you inspect a hallmarked gold piece through a jewellers loupe, look for three distinct laser marks:
1. The BIS Logo: A triangular emblem symbolizing national standard certification.
2. The Purity Code: For 22-karat gold, you will see 22K916 (representing 91.6% pure gold). For 18-karat gold, it will read 18K750 (75% pure gold).
3. The HUID Code: A unique alphanumeric string etched onto the inner band, which can be instantly verified in the governments BIS Care App.
Santosh Kumar Sarraf & Son was one of the first jewellers in Hapur to introduce BIS Hallmarking, years before it became mandatory nationwide, and maintains fully hallmarked inventory today.
